Church Under the Bridge

Church Under the Bridge

I just read about a church that meets weekly under an overpass on Interstate-35 in Waco, Texas. The church is called the… Church Under the Bridge. This article is a must-read from Relevant Magazine… and will challenge your thoughts about meeting within the “walls of your church”.

Take a moment to read the article in it’s entirety HERE. Here’s my favorite quote from Jimmy Dorrell, the pastor of the Church Under the Bridge…

There were a lot of folks who were unchurched who would never walk into the doors of a building but feel free there to just stand on the edges. As soon as you go into a building, you lose that. You begin to have walls that mean people have to come in and sort of be there and participate so it changes that. We also just found out that this has an incredible impact on being the visible community. We think that the church is the visible community, not a building but the people.

I have driven over that stretch of I-35 in Waco many times… and I’ve not once been captivated by the “sacredness” of that overpass, or the “beauty” of that bridge, or the “holiness” of that highway. Remember… where-ever you and I gather… that’s where the Church is (see Matthew 18:20).

In an increasingly post-Christian society… What are you doing to take the Church to the world?

Wasn’t it Wesley that took the Gospel to the people when the establishment barred his new-style message from the church? Most of these people were not welcomed in the church until they changed, and they had no desire to change until the Gospel got hold of their lives.

I used to be a jail chaplain. When the staff wanted to clear the breakroom for my Bible studies, I asked them not to. This gave the men a chance to listen to the Bible without admitting they weren’t paying attention to the card game. Lives were changed because I met them half way and let them enter the circle when they were ready.
